Best Practices¶
Enable the VerityData Tools¶
After connecting the VerityData MCP, go to your Claude settings and confirm the VerityData connector is showing as active. If a data request fails or Claude responds from general knowledge instead of pulling Verity data, this is the first thing to check.
Recommended Settings¶
- Web search: Turn on to let Claude supplement Verity data with news and company context.
- Files feature preview: Turn on so Claude can produce Excel, Word, PDF, and PowerPoint deliverables.
- Multiple connectors: If you have other MCP sources connected (market data, news), Claude can combine data from multiple connectors in a single response.
Set Your Preferences¶
- Work description: Select a finance-related option under “what best describes your work” so Claude calibrates responses to your expertise level.
- Personal preferences: Use this field for standing instructions: tickers you follow, output formats, coverage areas. Applies across all conversations.
- Memory: Lets Claude remember preferences across sessions. Check with your compliance team before enabling.
- Projects: For repeat workflows, Projects let you set persistent instructions and upload reference documents. Optional but worth exploring.
Working with the Tools¶
- Be specific: Specify ticker symbols, time periods, and data types (insider transactions, research briefs, buyback activity, SEC filings).
- Name your output: Say “give me this in Excel” or “build a dashboard” so Claude routes to the right format.
- Combine and stack: Pull from multiple connectors and across multiple tickers in a single request.
- Iterate, don’t restart: Refine with follow-ups like “remove the exercise-and-sales” or “narrow to 90 days.”
- Research briefs: Written by the VerityData research team — a data source, not something Claude generates. Pull, summarize, filter, or incorporate them into analysis.
Usage Awareness¶
Simple data pulls are lightweight. Multi-ticker requests that combine several tools and generate formatted outputs (dashboards, workbooks, reports) use significantly more. This doesn’t mean you should avoid complex workflows — just be aware they consume more on plans with usage limits or metered billing. Breaking large requests into smaller steps across separate conversations can help.
Troubleshooting¶
- No data returned: Check that the VerityData connector is active. Verify the ticker symbol and time period.
- Claude doesn’t use the tools: Mention VerityData by name or reference specific data types so Claude routes to the MCP.
- Output looks wrong: Tell Claude what to fix in a follow-up rather than starting over.
- Slow responses: Multi-tool, multi-ticker requests take longer due to sequential data calls. Normal.
- Skill not applied: Make sure you’re in the Project where the skill is uploaded. Skills aren’t available outside their Project.
